Joshua 12 Commentary

(12:1-24) A List of the Conquered Lands - Joshua 12 is a summary of the first half of the book of Joshua. It lists the kings and peoples conquered by Joshua both east and west of the Jordan River. As long as the Israelites trusted and obeyed God, one evil nation after another fell in defeat. Joshua Displayed brilliant military strategy in the way he went about conquering the land of Canaan. Starting at Jericho showing the great power of the God of the Isrealites. Then he gained the hill country of Gibeon and Bethel. From there the low lands including Hazor east and west of the Jordan River. All in all a brilliant strategy as they followed the Lord.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

A Payday Someday

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we Continue in the book of Joshua with Chapter 12 and we see the Dividing of the Promised land. After 7 years of battle Joshua dismisses the Army and starts the distribution of the land to the precise instruction that God gave Moses. What catches my eye today is the reward that comes to those who obey. In making application we see a reward coming to those who follow Christ in Heaven someday. I thank the Lord for saving me and I serve Him because I love Him. I don't focus on the rewards but the truth is there is a reward coming to saints of God. Just as our text today explains that those who are saved and faithful will get rewards that we intern can place at the feet of our Savior in Heaven. How about you? Do you see the rewards we will receive one day. Let us learn from today's text and realize there will be a payday someday.

 1Now these are the kings of the land, which the children of Israel smote, and possessed their land on the other side Jordan toward the rising of the sun, from the river Arnon unto mount Hermon, and all the plain on the east:

 2Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and from the middle of the river, and from half Gilead, even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon;

 3And from the plain to the sea of Chinneroth on the east, and unto the sea of the plain, even the salt sea on the east, the way to Bethjeshimoth; and from the south, under Ashdothpisgah:

 4And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,
