Hosea: Chapter 13 Commentary

(13:1) Israel had been great, but by Hosea's time the people had rebelled against God and lost their authority among the nations. Greatness in the past is not a guarantee of greatness in the future. It is good to remember what God has done for you and through youl but it i equally important to keep your relationship with him vital and up to date. Commit yourself to the Lord moment by moment.

(13:4-6) When Israel's possessions made it feel self sufficient. It turned it back on the Lord and forgot Him. Self-sufficiency is as destructive today as it was in Hosea's time and is type of self worship. Don't depend on your gifts but rather the giver as outlined in Deuteronomy chapter 6 and 8.

(13:11) God had warned Israel that kings would cause more problems than they would solve, and he reluctantly gave them Saul as their first king (1 Samuel 8) David was a good king, and Solomon had his strengths, but once the nation divided in two, the Northern Kingdom never had divided into 2 the Northern Kingdom never had another good ruler. Evil kings led the nation deeper into idolatry and unwise political alliances. Eventually the evil kings destroyed the nation, and with Hoshea, the Northern Kingdom's kings were cut off (2 Kings 17)

(13:2) Ephraim's (Israel's) sins were recorded for later punishment. All our sins are know and will be revealed at the day of judgement (2 Corinthians 5 and Revelation 20)

(13:14) God cannot save those who refuse to repent, saying no to God can become a stubborn habit. Before time runs out or you become completely hardened to his voice, come to him for forgiveness and new direction in your life.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Self Sufficiency

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the Book of Hosea with Chapter 13 In our text today we see God expressing His anger against Israel. Here Israel placed its trust in its possessions verses the God that allowed them to produce them. In making application we see that a self-sufficient attitude is one of pride and will lead down a path of judgment. How about you? Do you have an attitude of self sufficiency? Let us learn from our text today to see the mistake of taking credit for the blessings from God with the attitude of sufficiency recognizing that all of our blessings come from the Lord.

Hosea 13

Hosea 13

1When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died.

2And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

3Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

4Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no saviour beside me.

5I did know thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

6According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.

7Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them:

8I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.

9O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in me is thine help.

10I will be thy king: where is any other that may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes?

11I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.

12The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is hid.

13The sorrows of a travailing woman shall come upon him: he is an unwise son; for he should not stay long in the place of the breaking forth of children.

14I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

15Though he be fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of the LORD shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

16Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
