Zechariah: Chapter 5 Commentary

(5:1-8) The judgement of the Flying roll (scroll) was leveled against those who violate God's Law, specifically by stealing and lying. The woman in the basket personified wickedness, and so this vision showed that wickedness would be not only severely punished (the vision of the flying scroll), but also banished (the vision of the woman in the basket)

(5-9-11) The woman in the basket was carried away to Babylon (the land of Shinar) which had become a symbol, the center of world idolatry and wickedness. This woman was a picture to Zechariah that wickedness and sin would be taken away from Israel. One day sin will be removed from the entire earth. When Christ died, he removed sin's power and penalty. When we trust him to forgive us, he removes the penalty of sin and gives us the power to overcome sin in our lives. When he returns, he will remove all sin from the earth, When Jesus Christ reigns, all sin will be eliminated and people will live in safety and security.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

A Flying Scroll

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the book ofZechariah with Chapter 5. In our text today we see Zechariah seeing the vision of a flying scroll and a flying basket which symbolized God's Judgement and Banishment. In making application we see the seriousness of sin and its consequences. Today many think that God will not judge their sin and excuse liberty for license but the truth is all sin is worthy of judgement. How about you? Do you believe that God will judge your sin? Let us learn from our text today and the vision of Zechariah to see that the Lord does judge your sin and your only hope is forgiveness of your sin debt through the finished work of Calvary through our Lord and Savior Jesus-Christ.

Zechariah 5

Zechariah 5

1Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.

2And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

3Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side according to it.

4I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

5Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, Lift up now thine eyes, and see what is this that goeth forth.

6And I said, What is it? And he said, This is an ephah that goeth forth. He said moreover, This is their resemblance through all the earth.

7And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.

8And he said, This is wickedness. And he cast it into the midst of the ephah; and he cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.

9Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.

10Then said I to the angel that talked with me, Whither do these bear the ephah?

11And he said unto me, To build it an house in the land of Shinar: and it shall be established, and set there upon her own base.
