Zechariah: Chapter 13 Commentary

(13:1) There will be a never-ending supply of God's Mercy, forgiveness, and cleansing power. This picture of a fountain is similar to the never-ending stream flowing out of the Temple (Ezekiel 47) The fountain is used in scripture to symbolize God's forgiveness. . In John 4, Jesus tells of his "living water" that satisfies completely. Are you spiritually thirsty? Do you need to experience God's forgiveness? Drink from the Fountain - ask Jesus to Forgive You and give you his salvation.

(13:2-6) This chapter pictures the final days of the earth as we know it. For God's new era to begin there must be a cleansing - all evil must be abolished. Therefore, idols will be "cut off" and false prophets will be ashamed of themselves and will no longer try to deceive God's people.

(13:7) Just before his arrest, Jesus quoted from this verse, referring to himself and his disciples (Matthew 26) He knew beforehand that his disciples would scatter when he was arrested. The Roman "sword" was the military power that put CHrist to death.

(13:9) A remnant is a small part of the whole. Throughout the history of Israel, whenever the whole nation seemed to turn against God, God said that a righteous remnant still trusted and followed him. These believers were refined like silver and gold through the fire of their difficult circumstances. Determine to be part of God's remnant, that small part of the whole that is obedient to him. Obey him no matter what the rest of the world does. This may mean trials and troubles at times, but as fire purifies gold and silver, you will be purified and made more like Christ.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

A Refining Fire

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the book ofZechariah with Chapter 13. In our text today we see a fountain of cleansing picturing the last days on earth and a refining fire that will purify just as gold is smelted. In making application we see that only the items we do in and through the Lord will last for eternity. All other items of the world that consume our time and energy will be burned away. How about you? Do you see what your life is profiting? Let us learn from our text today and the words of Zechariah who remind us that only that which we do in and through the Lord will last for eternity.

Zechariah 13

Zechariah 13

1In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.

2And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.

3And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth.

4And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive:

5But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

6And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.

7Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

8And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

9And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.
