Isaiah 50 Commentary

(50:1-2) Forgetting God - God promised to fight for Israel, but the Israelites had sold themselves into sin. They had caused their own problems. God didn't lack the power he needed to help his people. They had forgotten him and had turned to other nations for help. God had not rejected Israel, but Israel had rejected God.

(50:6) Jesus Suffered Our Sins - Isaiah addresses how the Lord's servant would be beaten, mocked, and spit upon. These were acts of shameful defilement that were usually reserved for criminals. Here Isaiah prophesies how Jesus would suffer for our sins and be shamed like a criminal. Jesus is the Lord's obedient servant described in this chapter. About Jesus' suffering, Mark wrote, "They smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him" (Mark 15:19). Peter also said, "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed" (1 Peter 2:24). We should be continually grateful that Jesus healed us by the humiliation he suffered on our behalf and his death on the cross.

(50:10-11) Trusting Christ - If we walk by our own insights and beliefs and reject God's servant, Jesus, we become self-sufficient, at least in our own eyes. When we place confidence in our own intelligence, appearance, or accomplishments instead of in Jesus Christ, we risk torment later, when these strengths fade.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Obedience

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Isaiah with Chapter 50. In our text today, we see that God's servants obey no matter how the circumstances appear because they know of the faithfulness of our Lord. In making an application, we see that a true believer's testimony is obedience. Being born again, a believer will not be perfect but will have a heart of obedience. How about you? Is your heart obedient to our Lord and His Word? Let us learn from our text today and the teachings of Isaiah that remind us that a true believer will have a testimony of obedience to the Lord and His Word.

Isaiah 50

Isaiah 50

1Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

2Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

3I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

4The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

5The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

6I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

7For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

8He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

9Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

10Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.

11Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
