Dave Burnette's Commentary

Isaiah Chapter 52

Written By: God through Inspiration
Penned By: Isaiah
Date Penned: (700-681 BC)
Overview: To Tell of God's Salvation through the Messiah (c 1-66)
Theme: Words of Comfort (c 40-66)
Message: The Lord Will Rescue His People (v 1-15)

Isaiah 52 Commentary

(52:7) Beautiful Feet - God says that the feet of those who bring good news are beautiful. It is a wonderful privilege to be able to share God's gospel ("good news") with others--his news of redemption, salvation, and peace. To whom do you need to give the gospel?

(52:12) The Lord's Protection - The people did not have to leave in fearful haste because Cyrus, God's anointed (45:1), decreed that the Jewish exiles could return safely to Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1-4). They had the king's approval and his guaranteed protection. More important, the Lord would go ahead to point the way and be behind to protect them.

(52:13) The Messiah - The servant, as the term is used here, is a reference to the Messiah, Jesus Christ. He would be highly exalted because of his sacrifice, described in Isaiah 53.

(52:14-15) Marred - This servant, Jesus Christ, would be "marred more than any man" by his suffering; however, through his suffering, he would cleanse the nations (Hebrews 10:14; 1 Peter 1:2). Though sinless and perfect, he would be beaten beyond recognition because of our sins.alted him. That shall be discovered by the gospel of Christ, which could never be told in any other way. And Christ having once shed his blood for sinners, its power still continues. May all opposers see the wisdom of ceasing from their opposition, and be made partakers of the blood of sprinkling, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost; obeying him, and praising his salvation.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Stand for the Lord

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Isaiah with Chapter 52. In our text today, we see that the Lord will rescue His people even though His servant will be despised. In applying, we see that the Lord is faithful even when we are not. Peter denied the Lord, and so do we when we choose to deny our Lord before others. How about you? Do you deny the Lord or fail to stand up for Him before others? Let us learn from our text today to remember that the Lord is faithful to us, so we should be faithful enough to stand for Him in the world in which we live today.

Isaiah 52

Isaiah 52

1Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the unclean.

2Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion.

3For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.

4For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.

5Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

6Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

7How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

8Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.

9Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

10The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

11Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD.

12For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your reward.

13Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.

14As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

15So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
