Isaiah 61 Commentary

(61:1-2) A Fulfillment of Prophecy - Jesus quoted these words in Luke 4:18-19. As he read to the people in the synagogue, he stopped in the middle of Isaiah 61:2 after the words "to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." Rolling up the scroll, he said, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears" (Luke 4:21). The next portion of Isaiah 61:2, "and the day of vengeance of our God," will come true when Jesus returns to earth again. We are now under God's favor; his wrath is yet to come.

(61:6) The Old Covenant - Under the old covenant, God ordained the priests of Israel to stand between him and his people. They brought God's word to the people and the people's needs and sins to God. Under the new covenant, all believers are priests of the Lord (1 Peter 2:5), reading God's Word and seeking to understand it, confessing their sins directly to God, and ministering to others.

(61:8) Injustice - We suffer for many reasons-our own mistakes, someone else's mistakes, injustice. When we suffer for our mistakes, we get what we deserve. When we suffer because of others or because of injustice, God is angry. God, in his mercy, will one day deliver his people from all suffering. He will reward those who suffer because of injustice. He will settle all accounts.

(61:10) The Messiah - Me could refer to the Messiah, the person appointed by the Spirit of the Lord (61:1), or to Zion (62:1), which symbolizes God's people. The imagery of the bridegroom is often used in Scripture to depict the Messiah (see Matthew 9:15), while the imagery of the bride is used to depict God's people (see Revelation 19:6-8). We, too, can put on our new clothes--a right relationship with God--by putting our trust in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21).

The Power of the Gospel

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Isaiah with Chapter 61. In our text today, we see a proclamation for those who need the good news of Jesus Christ and the benefits for those who receive the Gospel. In making an application, we see a call to the believer to share the Gospel with others and a call for the lost to receive the good news and the benefits of having a relationship with a Holy God. How about you? Have you responded to the Gospel? Let us learn from our text today and the good news of the Gospel, which should cause the lost to get saved and the believer to share this life-changing message.

Isaiah 61

¹The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

²To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

³To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

⁴And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.

⁵And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

⁶But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.

⁷For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

⁸For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

⁹And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD hath blessed.

¹⁰I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

¹¹For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.
