Jeremiah 12 Commentary

(12:1-6) Swift Judgement - Many people have asked, "Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper?" (See, for example, Job 21:4-21 and Habakkuk 1:1-4.) Jeremiah knew that God's justice would ultimately come, but he was impatient because he wanted justice to come quickly. God didn't give a theoretical answer; instead, he gave a challenge: If Jeremiah couldn't handle this, how would he handle the injustices and invading armies that lay ahead? It is natural for us to demand fair play and cry for justice against those who take advantage of others. But when we call for justice, we must realize that we ourselves would be in big trouble if God gave each of us what we truly deserve.

(12:5-6) Answered Prayers - Life was extremely difficult for Jeremiah despite his love for and obedience to God. His own brothers had joined with the people of Anathoth in the plot to kill him (11:18- 21). When he called to God for relief, God's reply was, in effect, "If you think this is bad, how will you cope when it gets really tough?" Not all of God's answers to prayer are nice or easy to handle. Any Christian who has experienced war, bereavement, a serious illness, or being driven from their community knows this. But we are to stay committed to God even in difficult times, in times when his answers to our prayers don't bring needed relief, and in seasons when he doesn't even seem to be listening to us.

(12:14-17) God's Love - God chose a people through whom to demonstrate his care for the world. The people of Israel were given much; thus, much was required of them. But Israel repeatedly failed. The fate of other nations depended on their willingness to demonstrate faith in God, whether or not God's chosen people accomplished this task of witness. God's love extends to reach every square inch of the globe.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Why do the Wicked Prosper?

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Jeremiah with chapter 12. In our text today, Jeremiah complains to God about the wicked prospering. At the same time, God answers him by judging them according to His timing. In applying, we see the same scenario: some wicked people around us seem to prosper, but make no mistake, they will face the Lord and His judgment in His perfect timing. Today, we can be like Jeremiah and focus on the wicked instead of focusing on the Lord as He fights our battles and dispenses His Justice on His Timetable. How about you? Do you get discouraged in seeing the wicked prosper? Let us learn from our text today to see that our focus is on the Lord and not the temporary prosperity of evil as the Lord dispenses His Justice on His timetable.

Jeremiah 12

Jeremiah 12

1Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of thy judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously?

2Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

3But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

4How long shall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? the beasts are consumed, and the birds; because they said, He shall not see our last end.

5If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?

6For even thy brethren, and the house of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.

7I have forsaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my soul into the hand of her enemies.

8Mine heritage is unto me as a lion in the forest; it crieth out against me: therefore have I hated it.

9Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her; come ye, assemble all the beasts of the field, come to devour.

10Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.

11They have made it desolate, and being desolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made desolate, because no man layeth it to heart.

12The spoilers are come upon all high places through the wilderness: for the sword of the LORD shall devour from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land: no flesh shall have peace.

13They have sown wheat, but shall reap thorns: they have put themselves to pain, but shall not profit: and they shall be ashamed of your revenues because of the fierce anger of the LORD.

14Thus saith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have caused my people Israel to inherit; Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Judah from among them.

15And it shall come to pass, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have compassion on them, and will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.

16And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people.

17But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, saith the LORD.
