Dave Burnette's Commentary

1 Chronicles Chapter 2

Written By: God through Inspiration
Penned By: Ezra
Date Penned: (430 BC)
Overview: A History of God's Chosen People (c 1-29)
Theme: The Genealogies of Israel (c 1-9)
Message: Jacob's Descendants (v 1-55)

1 Chronicles 2 Commentary

(1:2) The Account of Israel - The story of Israel's (Jacob's) sons is found in Genesis 29:32-50:26. Including Joseph, Reuben, and Judah.

(2:3) God Keeps a Record - This long genealogy not only gives names but also gives us insights into the lives of some of the people listed. Here, almost as an epitaph, the genealogy states that Er "was evil in the sight of the LORD; and he slew him." Now, thousands of years later, this is all we know of the man. Each of us is forging a reputation, developing personal qualities by which we will be remembered. How would God summarize your life up to now? Some definitely claim that how they live is their own business. But Scripture teaches that the way we live today will determine how we will be remembered by others and how we will be judged by God. What you do now does matter.

(2:7) The Account of Achan - Achar is also called Achan. This is the same Achan who kept for himself some of the plunder following the destruction of Jericho, directly disobeying God's instructions. His greed led to the defeat of Israel at Ai and the death of Achan and his entire family (see Joshua 7).

(2:12) The Account of Boaz - Boaz was Ruth's husband and an ancestor of both David and Jesus. Boaz' story is found in the book of Ruth. Boaz and Ruth lived in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus.

(2:15) The Account of David - David is one of the best-known people of the Bible. He was certainly not perfect, but in general he exemplified what it means to seek God first in all areas of life. God referred to David as "a man after mine own heart" (Acts 13:22) because David's greatest desire was to serve and worship him. We can please God in the same way by making him our first consideration in all our desires and plans. David's story is found in 1 Samuel 16:1--1

Kings 2:11 and 1 Chronicles 10:14-29:30. See David's profile.

(2:16) The Account of Joab - Joab's story is found in 2 Samuel 2-3; 10-20; 24; 1 Kings 1-2; 1 Chronicles 11:4-9; 19-21. Abishai's story is found in 1 Samuel 26; 2 Samuel 2-3; 10; 16-21; 23; 1 Chronicles 18:12; 19. .

(2:18) The Account of Caleb - This is not the Caleb who scouted out the Promised Land with Joshua. Caleb the scout is listed in 4:15.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

God Has a Plan for Your Life

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the book of 1 Chronicles with Chapter 2. In our text today we continue to see the genealogy of Israel. In this account we see how God formed his chosen nation composed of imperfect people with a covenant or promise to Abraham. From Abraham to Isaac to Jacob who name was changed to Israel and his sons who become the twelve tribes of Israel. In all this we see that God has a Plan for Israel. In making application we see that not only does God have a plan for Israel but God has a plan for our lives. This plan includes Jesus-Christ who died on the cross for our sins. In Him we have salvation if we simply repent of sins and receive Hem as Lord and Savior. How about you? Do you see God's Plan for your life? Let us learn from our text today and the Chronicles of the generation of Israel to see that God has a Plan for your life.
