2 Chronicles 19 Commentary

(19:5-10) Follow God Not Man - Jehoshaphat delegated some of the responsibilities for ruling and judging the people, but he warned his appointees that they were accountable to God for the standards they used to judge others. Jehoshaphat's advice is helpful for all leaders: (1) Realize you are judging in the presence of God (19:6); (2) be just, impartial, and honest (19:7); (3) be faithful (19:9); and (4) act only out of fear of God, not people (19:9). God holds us accountable for the authority we exercise.

(19:8) Instill God's Wisdom In Those You Lead - Jehoshaphat appointed priests and Levites to help in administering civil laws. Many years earlier, Moses had chosen men who were capable, faithful, and honest to help him judge disputes among the people (Exodus 18:21-22). Obviously, the best kind of leader is one who always acts with reverence for God. Effective leaders get the job done; faithful leaders make sure the job is done in God's way and according to God's timing. They are careful to instill God's wisdom in future leaders and to build God's values into their entire communities.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Successful Leadership

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we Continue in the book of 2 Chronicles with Chapter 19 and we see Jehoshaphat being rebuked by Jehu and his appointment of Judges. In his choosing of leaders he gave them specific advice of seeking the Lord, being honest, impartial, faithful, morally right, and serving God rather than men. In making application we see the blueprint of successful leadership today. Leaders are to be honest, impartial, faithful, morally right, and should serve God looking to HIM for guidance. Our leadership in government today has strayed far from the example given in the Bible but we need to teach and train our future leaders the importance of these principles to guide our nation. How about you? Do you see the pattern for successful leadership? Let us learn from our text today and the example of Jehoshaphat to see the blueprint for successful leadership is to apply the instructions of the Bible to our lives.

2 Chronicles 19

2 Chronicles 19

1And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem.

2And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.

3Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God.

4And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through the people from Beersheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the LORD God of their fathers.

5And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city,

6And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.

7Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

8Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.

9And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.

10And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in your cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass.

11And, behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king's matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you. Deal courageously, and the LORD shall be with the good.
