Isaiah 26 Commentary

(26:1) People will praise God on the Day of the Lord when Christ establishes his kingdom (see Isaiah 12). Isaiah 26 is a psalm of trust, praise, and meditation. This is one of many instances of God revealing the future to Isaiah.

(26:2) Isaiah portrays Judah opening the gates of salvation to all who love the Lord. This was accomplished through Jesus Christ. Now all who love God are welcome to dwell together as his people. Because God wants to reach all people with his love, we must not exclude anyone who wants to have fellowship with him.

(26:3) Trust the Lord - We can never avoid strife in the world around us, but when we fix our thoughts on God, we can experience perfect peace even in turmoil. As we focus our minds on God and hold on to his Word, we become steady and stable. Supported by God's unchanging love and mighty power, we are not shaken by the surrounding chaos (see Philippians 4:7). Do you long for peace? Keep your thoughts on God and your trust in him.

(26:7-8) The Lord Gives Us What We Need - At times, the path of the righteous doesn't seem smooth and doing God's will can seem difficult, but we are never alone when we face tough seasons. God is there to help us through difficulties, to comfort us, and to lead us. He does this by giving us purpose (keeping our minds centered on him; 26:3) and giving us provisions as we travel. He also provides us with relationships with family, friends, and mentors. In addition, he gives us wisdom to make decisions and faith to trust him. Don't despair; stay on God's path.

(26:10) God Gives Grace - God gives benefits even to wicked people, but rarely does that grace seem to impact them so that they turn to him and do what is right. Sometimes a person can learn and grow more from God's judgment than from his good gifts. If you have been enriched by God's goodness and grace, respond to him with your grateful devotion. If you have been ignoring his kindness, turn back to him now.

(26:16-19) God is Merciful - The people realized the pain of being away from God's presence, and yet they were assured that they would live again. God turned his back on those who had disobeyed him, but a small number of the people never lost hope and continued to seek him. Although the faithful remnant suffered, God did not turn away from them. No matter how difficult times may be, we have hope when we keep our trust in God. Can you wait patiently for him to act?

(26:19) Life After Death - Some people say there is no life after death. Others believe that there is but it is not physical life. But Isaiah tells us that our bodies shall rise again. According to 1 Corinthians 15:50-53, all the dead believers will arise with new incorruptible bodies--bodies like the one Jesus had when he was resurrected (see Philippians 3:21). Isaiah 26:19 is not the only Old Testament verse to speak about the resurrection; see also Job 19:26; Psalm 16:10; and Daniel 12:2, 13.

(26:20-21) Standing Before the Lord - When God comes to judge the earth, the guilty will find no place to hide. Jesus said that the hidden will be made known because his truth, like a light shining in a dark corner, will reveal it (Matthew 10:26). Sometimes we can be tempted to portray ourselves a certain way in public but then think and behave however we want in private. But everything will one day be laid open before God. Instead of trying to hide your shameful thoughts and actions from God, confess them to him and receive his forgiveness.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Sing Unto the Lord a New Song

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Isaiah with Chapter 26. In our text today, we see the people sing unto the Lord and sing for others to hear of Jehovah's everlasting strength. In making application, we sing unto others our new song of victory so we will lift Him for others to See Him and be saved. How about you? Do you sing unto the Lord in the presence of others? Let us learn from our text today and the example of Judah to sing unto the Lord a New Song of testimony so others will see Jesus Christ and be saved.

Isaiah 26

Isaiah 26

1In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

2Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.

3Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

4Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

5For he bringeth down them that dwell on high; the lofty city, he layeth it low; he layeth it low, even to the ground; he bringeth it even to the dust.

6The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.

7The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

8Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O LORD, have we waited for thee; the desire of our soul is to thy name, and to the remembrance of thee.

9With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

10Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness: in the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly, and will not behold the majesty of the LORD.

11LORD, when thy hand is lifted up, they will not see: but they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people; yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.

12LORD, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.

13O LORD our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.

14They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

15Thou hast increased the nation, O LORD, thou hast increased the nation: thou art glorified: thou hadst removed it far unto all the ends of the earth.

16LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.

17Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O LORD.

18We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not wrought any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.

19Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

20Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

21For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.
