1 Timothy Chapter 2

Written By: God through Inspiration

Date Penned: (64 AD)
Overview: Instructions for the Early Church (c 1-3)
Theme: Instructions for the Church (c 2)
Message: Order in Worship (v 1-15)

1 Timothy 2 Commentary

(2:1-15) Instructions About Worship - The next two chapters cover Paul’s thinking on the expected character and behavior of believers when they are functioning as a church. Among the most hotly debated passages written by Paul, this one begins with guidelines for prayer (2:1-8) and moves on to what appear to be rigid restrictions placed on women (2:9-15) within the church. The range of interpretations varies from those who would still forbid women from teaching in the church to those who would write Paul off as presenting views not applicable to today.If Paul’s purpose in writing this letter was to guide Timothy in his confrontations with the false teachers (1:3), then that purpose must be used to understand Paul’s instructions. What Paul told Timothy to do in the volatile environment in Ephesus may not be what he would have directed a church to do where peace and harmony prevailed. We must understand the problem that Paul was addressing within Timothy’s situation before we conclude what applications might be made to our own. We must remember that Paul shares God’s desire for everyone to be saved (2:4). To that end, he wants Christian men to pursue holiness and Christian women to conduct themselves appropriately in the church.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

The Power in Worship

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the book of 1st Timothy with Chapter 2 and in our text we see Paul giving instructions for the Church and instructions about worship as reminds the body of Christ to gather, pray, give thanks, and lift us the truth of Jesus-Christ so that all men will be drawn unto Him. In making application we see the same instruction is relevant today as we are to assemble ourselves together, pray, and worship Jesus-Christ as to strengthen the body, lifting up Christ so that all may be saved. How about you? Do you see the power of Worship? Let us learn from our text today and the instruction of Paul to not forsake the assembling of ourselves but rather - gather, pray, and praise the Lord so that others may see Him in His Glory and be saved.

1 Timothy 2

1 Timothy 2

 1I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

 2For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

 3For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

 4Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

 5For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

 6Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

 7Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

 8I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

 9In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

 10But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

 11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

 12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

 13For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

 14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

 15Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
