Dave Burnette's Commentary

2 Timothy Chapter 1

Written By: God through Inspiration
Penned By: Paul
Date Penned: (66,67 AD)
Overview: Paul's Last Written Letter Expressing His Heart (c 1-4)
Theme: Foundations of Christian Service (c 1-2)
Message: Remain Faithful (v 1-18)

2 Timothy 1 Commentary

(1:1-2) Greetings from Paul - As Paul wrote this second letter, the Christian church throughout the empire was facing severe persecution and hardship. Emperor Nero had begun a major persecution in A.D. 64 as part of his plan to pass the blame for the great fire of Rome from himself to the Christians. This persecution spread across the empire and included social ostracism, public torture, and murder.Thus, the tone of this letter is somber. Paul, imprisoned for the last time, knew he would soon die. Unlike Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome in a house where he continued to teach (Acts 28:16, 23, 30), this time he was probably confined to a cold dungeon, awaiting his death (4:6-8). As Paul awaited execution, he wrote this letter to his dear friend Timothy, a younger man who was like a son to him (1:2). How Timothy must have cherished this last letter from his beloved mentor and friend.

(1:3-18) Encouragement to be Faithful - Paul’s gentle words provide a clearer picture of Timothy’s character. After their years of working companionship, the separated ministries had been difficult for both men. The parting had been painful (1:4). When Paul thought of his young disciple’s faithfulness, he was reminded of Lois and Eunice, who had made a contribution to Timothy’s faith. With these examples in mind, Paul was encouraged, and he proceeded to offer encouragement to Timothy. He elaborated on their shared role as guardians, heralds, and teachers of the gospel.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Are You Faithful?

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we start the book of 2nd Timothy with Chapter 1 and in our text we see Paul instructing Timothy in this letter as he pastors the Church in Ephesus. Here Timothy is instructed to be faithful in his Christian Service and Ministry. In making application we see need to follow this instruction today as we need to stay faithful in a culture that is going in the opposite direction. It is easy to get discouraged in these days but our Lord is in control and we need to keep our eyes on Jesus as we continue to serve Him in our lives. How about you? Are you faithful? Let us learn from out text today and the reminder of Paul to be faithful in these days, doing the Lord's Will, until He returns for His Church very soon.

2 Timothy 1

2 Timothy 1

 1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

 2To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

 3I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

 4Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

 5When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

 6Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

 7For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

 8Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

 9Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

 10But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

 11Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

 12For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

 13Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

 14That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

 15This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

 16The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

 17But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

 18The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
