Psalms 8 Commentary

(8:1) God Became Human - Portions of this psalm are quoted in the New Testament and applied to Christ (1 Corinthians 15:27; Hebrews 2:6-8). In the person of Jesus, God became human-"a little lower than the angels" (Psalm 8:5)-and he will raise all who belong to him when he comes to reign over the new heaven and new earth. Jesus is the only person who perfectly reflects God's image (Colossians 1:15).

(8:2) A Childlike Faith - Children are able to trust and praise God without doubts or reservations. As we get older, we can find this increasingly difficult to do. Ask God to give you childlike faith, removing any barriers to having a closer walk with him. Encourage this by promoting the children's ministry in your church. He hears the prayers and songs of little ones.

(8:3) You Are Valuable to the Lord - When we look at the vast expanse of creation, we wonder how God could show concern for people who constantly disappoint him. Yet God created us only a little lower than himself and the angels! The next time you question your worth as a person, remember that God considers you highly valuable. We have great worth because we bear the stamp of the Creator. (See Genesis 1:26-27 for the extent of worth God has placed on all people.) Because God has already declared how valuable we are to him, we can be set free from feelings of worthlessness.

(8:4) God's Majesty - To respect God's majesty, we must compare ourselves to his greatness. When we look at creation, which reflects the Creator in amazing ways, we often feel small by comparison. This is a healthy way to get back to reality, but God does not want us to dwell on our smallness. Humility means proper respect for God, not self-deprecation.

(8:6) Authority and Responsibility - God gave human beings tremendous authority--to be in charge of the whole earth. But with great authority comes great responsibility. If we adopt a pet or plant a garden or buy a plot of land, we have the authority to do with it as we wish, but we also have the responsibility to care for it. How do you treat God's creation? Use your resources wisely because God holds you accountable as a steward of his creation.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Our Worth

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter, making application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text.  Today we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 8. In our text today, we see a theme of God, the all-powerful creator, caring for His most valuable creation - people. This truth should allow us to realize our worth in the eyes of God. In making an application, we see how much God loves you. You are not only His most valuable creation, but he showed us how much He loved us when Jesus-Christ laid down his life on the Cross for our sins. This sacrifice allows us to spend eternity with a Holy God. How about you? Do you know that God Loves You? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to see that we have personal worth, and our personal worth is measured by - God, our Creator, and our Lord and Savior - Jesus-Christ.

Psalm 8

Psalm 8

 1O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

 2Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

 3When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;

 4What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

 5For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

 6Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

 7All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

 8The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

 9O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
