Psalms 62 Commentary

(62:1-7) Unshakable - David expressed his feelings to God and then reaffirmed his faith. Prayer can release our tension in times of emotional stress. Trusting God to be our rock, salvation, and defense will change our entire outlook on life. No longer must we be held captive by resentment toward others when they hurt us. When we are resting in God's strength, nothing can shake us.

(62:9-12) Vanity - It is tempting to use honor, power, wealth, and prestige to measure people. We may even think that such people are really getting ahead in life. But on God's scales, these people may be mere "vanity," like a puff of air. What, then, can tilt the scales when God weighs us? Trusting God and working for him (62-12). Wealth, honor, power, or prestige add nothing to our value in Gods eyes, but the faithful work we do for him has eternal value. Let us align our desires and priorities with what God thinks is important.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Our Foundation

Each day, we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter, making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 62. In our text today, we see a theme of placing our hope in God. Knowing He is our hope and salvation in the foundation of who we are and how we make decisions and feel secure. In applying, we see that the key to our Christian life is Jesus being our rock and salvation. If we are saved and resting in Him, we can face anything. How about you? Can you face anything in your life because your foundation is in Jesus? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that the key to our Christian life is having Jesus as our rock and salvation.

Psalm 62

Psalm 62

1Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.

2He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

3How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.

4They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.

5My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

6He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

7In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

8Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

9Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

10Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

11God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.

12Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.
