Psalms 65 Commentary

(65-2) Vows - In Old Testament times, vows were taken seriously and fulfilled completely. No one had to make a vow, but once one was made, it was binding (Deuteronomy 23:21-23). The vows mentioned here involved promises to praise God for his answers to prayer.

(65:3) The Lord Forgives Sins - Although we may feel overwhelmed by the multitude of our sins, God will forgive them all if we ask sincerely. Do you feel as though God could never forgive you, that your sins are too many, or that some of them are too terrible? The good news is that God can and will forgive them all. Nobody is beyond redemption, and no one is so full of sin that he or she cannot be forgiven and made clean. Do not hesitate to confess even your worst sins.

(65:4) The Tribe of Levi - Access to God and the joy of living in the temple courts was a great honor. God had chosen a special group of Israelites, the tribe of Levi, to serve as priests and servants in the Tabernacle (Numbers 3:5:51). They were the only ones who could enter the sacred rooms where God's presence resided. Jesus' death on the cross removed the barrier to God's presence (Matthew 27:50-51). Today, all believers have personal access to God's presence everywhere and at any time.

(65:6-13) God's Generosity - This harvest psalm glorifies God the Creator as reflected in the beauty of nature. Nature helps us understand something of God's character--his creativity, care, and generosity. We see his creative handiwork in the mountains, oceans, sunrises, sunsets, rivers, meadows, and valleys. The people of Israel believed that God's care of nature showed his love and care for them. Nature shows God's generosity--giving us more than we need or deserve. Understanding God's abundant generosity should make us grateful to God and spur us on to be generous to others.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Our Lord Provides

Each day, we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter, making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 65. In our text today, we see a theme of how God provides abundantly. He is faithful. In making an application, we see that we can be thankful to God for his many blessings. Today, we tend to be spoiled by the blessings of God. We often look at what we don't have or want instead of having a thankful heart for what God has blessed us with. The truth is that God is faithful in meeting our needs, just as David testifies in this text. How about you? Do you have a thankful heart acknowledging the blessings of our Lord? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today and remember that our Lord faithfully provides for our needs.

Psalm 65

Psalm 65

1Praise waiteth for thee, O God, in Sion: and unto thee shall the vow be performed.

2O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.

3Iniquities prevail against me: as for our transgressions, thou shalt purge them away.

4Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.

5By terrible things in righteousness wilt thou answer us, O God of our salvation; who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea:

6Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power:

7Which stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people.

8They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice.

9Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of God, which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it.

10Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thou makest it soft with showers: thou blessest the springing thereof.

11Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness.

12They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness: and the little hills rejoice on every side.

13The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing.
