Psalms 76 Commentary

(76:1) God's Awesome Power - This psalm praises God for his awesome power. It was most likely written to celebrate the defeat of Sennacherib's army after they invaded Judah during Hezekiah's reign (see 2 Kings 18:13-19.37).

(76:10) God's Wrath - How can wrath bring praise to God? Hostility to God and his people gives God the opportunity to do great deeds. For example, the pharaoh of Egypt refused to free the Hebrew slaves (Exodus 5:1-2) and thus allowed God to work mighty miracles for his people (Exodus 11:9). God turns the tables on evildoers and brings glory to himself from the foolishness of those who deny him or revolt against him. God's wrath expressed in judgment brings praise from those whom he has delivered.

(76:11-12) Actively Move Toward God - This psalm closes with an invitation to the listener or reader. Having stated the futility of resisting God, the writer shifts to the alternatives. These verses speak of more than surrender to God; they encourage us to actively move toward God, making commitments (rows) to him and carrying them out. Although making vows to God should be approached cautiously (Proverbs 20:25; Matthew 5:33-35), this psalm does encourage us to. think seriously about demonstrating our commitments to God. When was the last time you made a serious commitment to God? How much progress have you made in fulfilling it?

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Glory to God

Each day, we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter, making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 76. In our text today, we see a theme of how God uses those who revolt against Him to bring glory to Himself. In making application, we see how God is in control to the point that he uses those who persecute Him and His People to bring glory to God. Just as He used Pharaohs' anger to free His People in the past, today, we see God still uses those who persecute Him and His People to bring glory to Himself. Governments, religions, groups, and individuals who attempt to revolt against God are used to bring Glory to God. How about you? Are you fearful of others who want to persecute you? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that our Lord is in control to the point that He uses those who persecute us to bring Glory to Himself.

Psalm 76

Psalm 76

1In Judah is God known: his name is great in Israel.

2In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion.

3There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah.

4Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey.

5The stouthearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep: and none of the men of might have found their hands.

6At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep.

7Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?

8Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still,

9When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth. Selah.

10Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain.

11Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared.

12He shall cut off the spirit of princes: he is terrible to the kings of the earth.
