Psalms 91 Commentary

(91:1) A Psalm of Comfort - This psalm wonderfully reassures anyone facing the sickness or death of a loved one, time in prison, or some other great loss. When you have the opportunity, read this psalm aloud as a prayer for yourself or someone who needs help. It will bring great comfort, encouragement, and peace.
(91:1-6) God is Our Protector - God shelters and protects us when we are afraid, sick, or in deep trouble. The writer's faith in the almighty God as his protector would cany him through all of life's dangers and fears. This is a picture of how we should trust God-trading all our fears for faith in him, no matter how intense they may be. To do this, we must "dwell" and "abide" with him (0111). By entrusting ourselves to his protection and pledging our daily devotion to him, we acknowledge that he will keep us safe.

(91:11) Angels of God - One of the functions of angels is to watch over believers (Hebrews 114). There are examples of guardian angels in Scripture (Kings 10:5; Daniel 6:22; Matthew 18:10; Luke 16:32; Acts 12:7), although there is no indication that God assigns one angel to each believer. Angels can also be God's messengers (Matthew 249; Acts 27,23-24). Angels are not visible, except on special occasions (Numbers 33:31; Luke 2:9). We are not to worship angels or become preoccupied with them. They are God's servants (Hebrews 143-14; 2:5), actively present and at work in our world. The words of Psalm 01111-12 were quoted by Satan when he tempted Jesus (Matthew 4:6; Luke 4:10-11). It is comforting to know that God and his servants watch over us even in times of great stress and fear.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Our Refuge

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 91. In our text today, we see a theme of God's protection in the midst of danger. In making an application, we see that God does not promise us a world free from danger, but He does promise His help whenever we face danger. Today, we can be intimidated by our surroundings, but we can rest knowing that God is with us amid our struggles. How about you? Do you see the protection of the Lord in your life? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that our Lord protects us as He is our refuge and fortress.

Psalm 91

Psalm 91

 1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

 2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

 3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

 4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

 5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

 6Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

 7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

 8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

 9Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

 10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

 11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

 12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

 13Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

 14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

 15He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

 16With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
