Psalms 116 Commentary

(116:1) His Best - God is so responsive that you can always reach him. He bends down and listens to your prayers. This writer's love for the Lord had grown because he had experienced answers to his prayers. If you are discouraged, remember that God is near, listening carefully to every prayer, and answering each prayer in order to give you his best.

(116:15) His Presence - God stays close to us even in death. When someone we love is nearing death, we may become angry and feel abandoned. But believers are precious to God, and he carefully chooses the time when they are to be called into his presence. Let this truth provide comfort when you've lost a loved one. God notices, and each life is valuable to him (see Jesus' statement in Matthew 10:29)

Dave Burnette's Life Application

A Thankful Heart

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 116. In our text today, we see the theme of our Praise to the Lord for being saved from certain death. In applying, we see our worship as a thankful response to what the Lord has done for us. Our thankfulness comes from our heart of love as we acknowledge the gift of the Lord. How about you? Do you have a thankful heart? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that our thankfulness comes from our acknowledgment of the gift of our Lord and the expression of our love in true worship.

Psalm 116

Psalm 116

1I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.

2Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

3The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.

4Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.

5Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God is merciful.

6The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.

7Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.

8For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

9I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

10I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted:

11I said in my haste, All men are liars.

12What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?

13I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.

14I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.

15Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.

16O LORD, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.

17I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.

18I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.

19In the courts of the LORD's house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.
