Psalms 149 Commentary

(149:3-5) Praising God - Although the Bible invites us to praise God, we often aren't sure how to go about it. Here, several ways are suggested - by dancing, singing, and playing musical instruments. God enjoys his people, and we should enjoy praising him.

(149:6-7) Judgment - The "two edged sword" symbolizes the completeness of judgment that will be executed by the Messiah when he returns to punish all evildoers (Revelation 1316).

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Praise and Worship

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 149. In our text today, we see the theme of Praising the Lord in a Victorious Celebration. In our praise, an expression of joy, we see the Lord Pleased. In applying, we see genuine praise and worship as pleasing unto the Lord. Today, many of us go to Church but rarely engage in true worship. How about you? Do you worship the Lord? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that our Lord is pleased when we wholeheartedly praise the Lord.

Psalm 149

Psalm 149

 1Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints.

 2Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

 3Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.

 4For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

 5Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.

 6Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand;

 7To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people;

 8To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;

 9To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.
