Date Penned: (970-931 BC)
Overview: Wisdom to Teach People to Live Godly (c 1-31)
Theme: Wisdom for Young Men (c 1-9)
Message: Wisdom Guards Against Immorality (v 1-26)

Proverbs 7 Commentary

(7:1-6) wisdom for Men and Women - Although this advice is directed toward young men, young women should heed it as well. The person who has no purpose in life is naive and simpleminded

(7:6-23). Having no purpose or direction leaves a person empty and unstable, vulnerable to many temptations that promise fulfillment and satisfaction. Even though the young man in this passage doesn't know where he is going, the seductress knows exactly where she wants him. Notice her clever strategies: She is dressed to allure him (7:10); her approach is bold (7:13); she invites him over to her place (7:16-18); she cunningly answers his every objection (7:19-20); she flatters and persuades him with smooth talk (7:21); she traps him (7:23). To combat temptation, acknowledge your own vulnerability to it, stay close to God and his Word, and cultivate a life of accountability (7:4). Recognize the strategies and power of temptation, and run from them--fast. 725-27. You can take definite steps to avoid sexual sins. (1) Guard your mind. Don't read racy books or magazines, look at pornographic videos or websites, or daydream about fantasies that stimulate sinful desires. (2) Keep away from settings, friends, and activities that tempt you to sin. (3) Think beyond the moment's pleasure and focus on the future. Today's thrill may lead to tomorrow's ruin.

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Renew Your Mind

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue with the Book of Proverbs with Chapter 7. In our text today, we see how Wisdom guards against immorality. In making application, we see that living in this imperfect world, we need Wisdom to navigate through this world of sin. Today, the moral fabric of the world is full of immorality. If we are not careful, we will be influenced by others in the world's system. We need to renew our minds with the Word of God constantly. How about you? Do you read the Bible daily? Let us learn from our text today to remember that we live in an imperfect world and must renew our minds daily to navigate our lives.

Proverbs 7

Proverbs 7

1My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

2Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.

3Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.

4Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:

5That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.

6For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,

7And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,

8Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

9In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:

10And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.

11(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:

12Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)

13So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

14I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.

15Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.

16I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.

17I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

18Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.

19For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:

20He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.

21With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.

 22He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

23Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.

24Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.

25Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.

26For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.

27Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.
