Psalms 99 Commentary

(99:1)   Cherubims - Cherubims are mighty angelic beings and are one of several ranks of angels.

(99:3) The Name of God - Everyone should praise God's great and awesome name because his name points to his divine nature, his personhood, and his reputation. Through his name he established a relationship with his people. But we hear the name of God so often misused in both careless and vulgar conversations that we have lost sight of the holiness of his name. How easy it is to treat God and his name lightly in everyday life. If you claim him as your Father, live worthy of the family name. Respect God's name and give him praise by both your words and your life.

(99:5) The Holiness of God - God's holiness is terribly frightening for sinners but a wonderful comfort for believers. God's moral perfection sets him apart from people and sin. He has no weaknesses or shortcomings. This frightens sinners because the light of God's holiness exposes all their inadequacies and evil ways. God cannot tolerate, ignore, or excuse sin. For believers, God's holiness gives comfort because, as we worship him, we are lifted from the downward pull and darkness of sin. As we believe in him and humble ourselves before him, we begin the process of transformation. We are set apart for his use (see 2 Corinthians 3:18).

(99:6) A Cry for Help - The Bible records several instances where Moses and Samuel cried out to God for help (Exodus 15:25; 17:4; Numbers 11:11-15; 12:13; 14:13-45; 1 Samuel. 7:5, 9; 15:11).

Dave Burnette's Life Application

A Holy God

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 99. Today's text shows a theme of Praising God for His fairness and Holiness. In Making Application, we see that we can trust God because He is Just and He is Holy. This absolute gives us security in who He is, but it also shows us how inadequate we are as we are sinners in need of a Savior. Today, that truth is very evident. As our world gets more wicked, we see the Holiness of God and the depravity of man. How about you? Do you see the Holiness of God? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember the Holiness of God, which shows us He is in control, and we need to be saved to communicate with Him.

Psalm 99

Psalm 99

1The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.

2The LORD is great in Zion; and he is high above all the people.

3Let them praise thy great and terrible name; for it is holy.

4The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob.

5Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy.

6Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.

7He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them.

8Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.

9Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
