Psalms 130 Commentary

(130:1-2) Repentance - In the depths of despair, the writer of this psalm cried out to God. Despair makes us feel hopeless, isolated, and distant from God, but this is precisely when we need God most. Despair over our sin should not lead to self-doubt and loathing. To let it do so would make us think more about ourselves than God. instead, it should lead to confession and then to God's mercy, forgiveness, and redemption. When we feel guilty for past failures or overwhelmed by problems, feeling sorry for ourselves will only increase feelings of hopelessness. But crying out to God will turn our attention to the Almighty One whom we can always count on for help.

(130:3-4) Holding Grudges - Marking iniquities (or holding grudges) builds a wall between you and another person. It becomes nearly impossible to communicate while the wall is there. God doesn't keep a record of our sins; when he forgives, he forgives completely, tearing down any wall between us and him. Although we fear (revere) God, we can still talk to him about anything. When you pray, realize that God is holding nothing against you. He keeps his lines of communication completely open. Keep yours open to others too

Dave Burnette's Life Application

The Lord Fogives Sins

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 130. Our text today shows the theme of Assurance of the Lord's Forgiveness. In applying, we see the assurance that if we genuinely confess our sins to the Lord, He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. How about you? Do you know the Lord will forgive us if we come to Him in Repentance? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that we have His Word and that if we confess and repent of our sins, the Lord will hear us, forgive our sins, and save our souls.

Psalm 130

Psalm 130

1Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.

2Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

3If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

4But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

5I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.

6My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

7Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

8And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
