Psalms 129 Commentary

(129:2) Persecuted but Victorious - The people of Israel were persecuted from their earliest days but never destroyed completely. The same is true of the church. Christians have faced times of severe persecution, but the church has never been destroyed. As Jesus said to Peter, "And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18). Many Christians around the world are still being martyred for their faith. Attacks may also come in other ways. When you face persecution, discrimination, and hostile attitudes, take courage- Christ's church will never be destroyed.

(129:3) A Prophetic Verse - This verse foreshadows Jesus' unjust punishment before his death. He endured horrible lashes from the whip of his tormentors, which indeed made furrows in his back (John 19:1).

Dave Burnette's Life Application

Facing Adversity

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today, we continue in the Book of Psalms with Chapter 129. In our text today, we see the theme of how we can have confidence in times of persecution. In applying, we see how we can have this same confidence when facing adversity. Today, we live in a sin-cursed world, and adversity will come our way. Understanding and knowing in tough times that our God will bring us through is encouraging. How about you? Are you facing adversity? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that our Lord is in control and will bring us through the tough times and adversity we face daily.

Psalm 129

Psalm 129

1Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

2Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.

3The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

4The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

5Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.

6Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:

7Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.

8Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the LORD be upon you: we bless you in the name of the LORD.
